Starting your day with a high calorie drink can help you reach your calorie intake goals! Whether you’re trying to gain or maintain weight, increasing your calorie intake in easy-to-eat (or drink!) ways are beneficial.

Starting off small, like including higher calorie ingredients in your morning coffee is a great way to start!

  • Maca root powder
  • Cocoa powder
  • Unsweetened coconut cream coffee creamer (any brand)
  • Coconut sugar
  • Coconut essence or Vanilla extract
  • Cinnamon stick

Ingredient Benefits

Coffee: Not only does coffee contain caffeine and give us an energy boost, but it also contains antioxidants! Coffee may also reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and support weight management when consuming less than a few cups a day.

Maca Root Powder: Also called Peruvian Ginseng, maca root is a vegetable related to broccoli and kale. The powder may used to help with fertility and some respiratory conditions. It also contains many vitamins and minerals, and is high in fiber!

Coconut Cream: A great alternative to heavy cream, coconut cream is high in potassium which helps maintain the health of cells in our bodies. It is also a good source of antioxidants and choline, which is an essential nutrient!

Coconut Sugar: Is a coconutty alternative to brown sugar and contains a significant amount of potassium!

Cinnamon: It has been scientifically proven that cinnamon contains many health benefits however, not all cinnamon is created equal.

Regular cinnamon, or cassia cinnamon, is what you can buy at most grocery stores. Ceylon cinnamon can be found on the internet or at health food stores, and is safer to consume in large amounts than regular cinnamon.

Ceylon cinnamon has lower amounts of a compound called coumarin, which in larger quantities can be harmful to our health. Having about a teaspoon of ceylon cinnamon each day can increase the health advantages to cinnamon which include:

Preventing infections, having antiviral properties, may help lower blood sugar levels, may increase insulin sensitivity, can potentially prevent heart disease, anti-inflammatory, and contain antioxidants!

Cinnamon has been used as a medicinal spice for many years and is now getting backed up by science!

Ingredient Swaps

Some ingredients in our Chocolate Coconut Cream Iced Coffee may be swapped to suit your tastes and preferences. I do not recommend swapping out the coffee, since that is the base of our drink!

Maca root powder can get swapped with cacao powder or even ground chia seeds if you have any of those on hand! If you don’t like coconut milk, you can substitute with any other milk of choice. I recommend choosing something like cream or whole milk since they are thicker than other milks and higher in calories!

Swap coconut sugar with brown sugar if that is what you have! The coconut sugar will give a great coconut taste, but brown sugar works just as well.

Choose any extract you would like and customize this drink to your liking! If you would like, the cinnamon stick can even be left out, or you can use about a half teaspoon of ground cinnamon.

How to Make Chocolate Coconut Cream Iced Coffee

Place your cinnamon stick in 12 ounces of water in a medium pot and boil for about 4 minutes. Then, gradually add your maca root powder, and cocoa powder. Whisk until smooth.

Add the instant coffee powder and coconut sugar while continuing to whisk. Once everything is mixed, add your coconut cream and simmer on medium low heat for one minute.

After simmering, turn the stove off and add the coconut or vanilla extract. Strain if you would like and let cool for about 30 minutes.

This drink can also be consumed hot!

To consume iced- pour cooled down liquid over ice and enjoy! You may also add some whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon!

What to Eat with Chocolate Coconut Cream Iced Coffee

For a balanced, high calorie breakfast, enjoy this Chocolate Coconut Cream Iced Coffee with a high calorie meal! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it helps us get fueled for the day ahead.

A great option to pair this Chocolate Coconut Cream Iced coffee with is avocado toast with eggs and bacon! Avocado is high in calories and good fats, and eggs are filled with protein. They are also delicious. Adding some bacon helps add in more protein; try turkey bacon for a higher protein option!

If you like sweet rather than savory, pairing our iced coffee with some protein pancakes like Kodiak Cakes that have whole grains, or homemade, are a great option. Add some berries and fruit on top with whipped cream and maple syrup for a fiber filled breakfast!
