Many suffer from a reduced appetite, chewing or swallowing issues, certain diseases and illnesses, or other ailments that make it difficult to gain or maintain their weight.

Older adults are particularly at risk for under-eating and struggling to maintain their weight or gain weight. They tend to lose muscle mass and suffer from unintended weight loss. Weight Gain During the Holidays

When we think of holiday’s, the first thing that comes to mind are the sweets and treats made to celebrate. This can be used as an advantage to those that are trying to gain or maintain their weight. Since most sweets are high in calories and high in sugar it helps to increase our energy intake.

Not restricting sugar can actually help us regulate the amount of sugar that we consume. Restricting something, like sugar, can make us hyperfocus on the thing we are restricting. This makes us want it more. In turn, it can lead to binging or other unhealthy habits.

Allowing a sweet here and there can actually help us have a healthy relationship with sweets and food! Enjoying the sweets that come with our holiday traditions is also good for our mental health. It can bring feelings of nostalgia and community!
