What is Dragon Fruit?

Dragon Fruit is a tropical fruit that is either white or pink on the inside with black seeds.

It can also be referred to as pitaya or pitahaya, and is sometimes called a strawberry pear. The taste is often described as a cross between a kiwi and a pear. The texture is similar to a soft pear and the seeds inside are edible.

Dragon fruit is native to southern Mexico and Central America and is the fruit from different cactus species.

Many smoothie and smoothie bowl restaurants use the pitaya version as a base for their smoothies and bowls to get that bright pink color!

Selecting Your Dragon Fruit

To ensure you get a ripe fruit at the grocery store, select one with bright pink skin that is slightly soft when squeezed. The most common variety of dragon fruit is white on the inside. To get the bright pink color for your drink, look specifically for the variety pitaya.

If you buy a dragon fruit that is not completely ripe, you can leave it out on the counter for a few days. Test it each day by pressing on the skin to see if it is soft.

You can find Dragon Fruit at most local grocery stores and they are delicious raw, in drinks like this Highest Calorie Fruit [Dragon Fruit Yogurt Drink], or in smoothies!
